BNB Chain’s Jenner upgrade: payment capacity and new asset controls
BNB Chain released BSC v1.8.1, which scheduled the Jenner hard fork for the Chapel testnet on October 29, 2026, at 02:30 UTC. BNB Chain’s blog says Jenner is live on testnet, and data from public Chapel nodes show it activated on schedule.

A payment lane for eligible transfers
Payment Lane reserves 5% of block gas by default for eligible payments. These include nonzero BNB transfers to accounts without code and transactions sent to governance-approved payment contracts. It does not guarantee inclusion in a particular block or eliminate fees.
CAS20 asset controls
CAS20 adds a native asset standard with transfer policies, allowlists, blocklists and pause controls. Token creation requires separate activation by a governance-appointed administrator; these controls do not themselves establish legal compliance.
Millisecond timestamps
A new interface lets smart contracts read block timestamps in milliseconds. The existing block.timestamp value stays in seconds, and the change does not increase block speed.
What the payment reservation changes
Governance can change the reservation from its default 5%, up to a 10% protocol limit. The payment-contract list starts empty, so a stablecoin does not qualify simply because it is used for payments. Unused reserved gas cannot be reassigned to general transactions; eligible payments can still compete for the rest of the block. This protects capacity during congestion, but leaves some block space unused when payment demand is low.
What developers need to check
The release also updates block-builder tooling, including binary BidBlock submission over gRPC; those client improvements do not require a hard fork. For several RPC calls, a supplied blockOverrides.prevRandao must encode the millisecond remainder as a 32-byte value after the client is upgraded, even before Jenner activates. Testnet operators and integrators should consult the release notes for their client and verify their own configuration.
A wallet integration question on GitHub
In an October 5 issue in the Trezor Blockbook repository, GitHub user cranycrane proposed tracking the multiplier for the CAS20 Asset variant. The author warned that a wallet displaying raw amounts without accounting for the multiplier could show an incorrect balance or history, and proposed indexing multiplier changes. The issue says token creation requires separate activation and describes the work as not urgent. It is a proposed integration change, not a confirmed incident or a completed fix.
Testnet and mainnet
The v1.8.1 release targets Chapel testnet; it does not schedule mainnet activation. BNB Chain is a separate ecosystem from the Binance exchange.
