Origins in 2017
Binance launched in July 2017, led by Changpeng Zhao (CZ), with Yi He among its co-founders. Its early exchange focused on connecting buyers and sellers of digital assets through a crypto-to-crypto trading platform.
The launch came during a period of rapid growth in cryptocurrency markets. Binance expanded its trading services and developed an ecosystem around the exchange, including education and wallet-related products.
A move into derivatives
In September 2019, Binance Futures went live, adding futures trading to a platform previously associated mainly with spot markets. The launch expanded the range of products, while also introducing different risks from buying and holding an asset.
The platform subsequently developed additional services, including earning products and tools for accessing blockchain applications. Product names, availability, and eligibility can differ by jurisdiction.
Compliance and context
In 2023, Binance and Zhao pleaded guilty to U.S. federal charges as part of a settlement. This is an important part of the exchange’s history alongside its product launches; users should assess the services and legal entity available in their own region.
Past product launches and referral offers do not establish the suitability or safety of an exchange. Verify current fees, eligibility, and terms before registering or trading.
