Founding and early focus
Coinbase began in 2012. Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam are its co-founders; Coinbase’s company background describes its original aim as making it easier to send and receive Bitcoin.
From that early Bitcoin focus, the company developed exchange and account services for a broader range of crypto assets. Products and asset availability depend on jurisdiction and account eligibility.
Coinbase Pro and Advanced Trade
Coinbase says Coinbase Pro launched in 2018 for traders using order books and technical analysis. In 2022 it announced a move toward Advanced Trade within the main Coinbase experience.
According to Coinbase’s update, the phased migration from Pro was completed in November 2023. This was a product transition rather than a change to the company’s founding date.
A wider set of services
Over time, Coinbase expanded into services beyond basic buying and selling, including wallet-related tools and additional trading products. The details, fees, and eligibility of each service can differ.
